One soldier was killed and another injured when guerrillas fired at an army convoy in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, police said.
The attack, in the southern town of Pampore, took place when a “road opening party” of Rashtriya Rifles was at work.

Political leaders without spines, says West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Facebook
The number of “so-called political leaders having no spines” is growing, a post on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Facebook profile said Saturday.
The post on the popular social networking site also urged the youth to stand up.
“Nowadays, I’m not surprised when I see growing numbers of so-called political leaders having no spines. In my opinion, it has become a potential area of doing research work on this aspect,” the post read.
The post said lack of ideals, courage and links with roots of common people had led to leaders becoming weak and afraid to fight for the cause of common people and reveal the truth.
“Let us dedicate ourselves for the common people. I appeal to the young generation to awake, fight, stand up and instil a spirit of mind without fear,” read the post which has received over 600 likes and 200 comments.
Of the comments, the one by Shubhashis Bhattacharya stands out: “It is the world of sycophants where spines don’t work. Dinesh Trivedi (former railway minister) had one perhaps, but you’ve chosen someone else. Have you ever checked the structure of your party? Where are the spines? And if you boast of your spine, where is the head?”

Sadananda Gowda to resign as Karnataka Chief Minister?: Decision at 6 pm - Live Updates
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) core group which met on Saturday in a bid to resolve the leadership crisis in Karnataka, has decided to replace Karnataka Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda with Lingayat leader Jagadish Shettar, the party sources said.
Addressing a press conference soon after the core group meet, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Sadananda Gowda will meet senior party leaders at 6:00 pm today. The final decision over the issue will be taken thereafter.”
Meanwhile, the party sources claimed that the party is set to change the Karnataka chief minister.
Karnataka crisis
The BJP in Karnataka is facing serious crisis with the former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa pressurizing the high command to replace Sadanand Gowda with Jagdish Shettar as chief minister.
A senior BJP leader from the state said, “A decision from the high command in this direction is likely to be conveyed within a week. We have apprised the party high command about the situation in Karnataka. Now it is upto the high command to take a decision.”
Sources said BJP President Nitin Gadkari has come around to the view that Shettar, a Yeddyurappa loyalist, should be the next chief minister.
The decision will have to be ratified by the BJP Parliamentary Board, the highest decision making body of the party, but most members are in agreement on the issue in view of the damage caused by constant threats from dissidents in the last four years.
Though the party had earlier indicated that the leadership change was expected to take place after the July 19 Presidential poll, the sources said this has been advanced by a few days in view of the Karnataka Assembly session commencing on July 16.
Leaders divided
Sources said BJP Parliamentary Party leader L K Advani is not very keen on choosing the third Chief Minister in this Assembly and feels the party should go for fresh elections.
Moreover, Advani is not inclined to have another nominee of Yeddyurappa as Chief Minister. Corruption charges against Yeddyurappa had dented the impact of Advani’s yatra against graft and blackmoney.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and party general secretary Ananth Kumar are also not in agreement with making a Yeddyurappa loyalist the Chief Minister but they may not press the matter further.
Looking at past examples, Gadkari is likely to prevail over the Parliamentary board and have his way by making Shettar the Chief Minister, sources said. Other members of the Board support his view.
Sources said an announcement is expected on July 9-10. However, there is still no clarity on whether a Deputy Chief Minister would be appointed to placate the other factions.

New Delhi: Opposition nominee PA Sangma on Saturday sought the Election Commission’s intervention for a fresh probe into his objections against the candidature of UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee, levelling new allegations that he was still holding two more offices of profit.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the Returning Officer’s dismissal of their complaint, a three-member delegation on behalf of Sangma met the Election Commission, which gave them time to present their written submission on their demand by Monday evening.
After the meeting, Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy claimed that Mukherjee continued to hold two more offices of profit – as Vice President of Birbhum Institute of Engineering and Technology and Chairman of Rabindra Bharti Society, which forms the Rabindra Bharti University.
He said the delegation met the Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath and placed their concerns. The Constitution allows the EC to intervene in the conduct of elections. “Here the issue is of fraud. Let the EC decide on whether there is a fraud in the nomination process. Let the EC take the final decision,” Swamy said.

The rains exposed the lackluster attitude of the authorities and tall claims that they are prepared for it. Severe water-logging at the heavy traffic sites like Akshardham and ISBT put the commuters into great trouble struggling to reach home safely.

Mirwaiz demands ban on Israeli tourists in Kashmir - Online News
Srinagar: Days after a dress code controversy in Kashmir, separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has now demanded a ban on Israeli tourists in the valley.
Calling Israel the biggest enemy of Islam, the Mirwaiz raised an objection to the tourism department’s road shows in Israel promoting tourism. Kashmir has had five lakh tourists this year. Out of these, 17,000 have been foreign nationals.
“Government should explain why it’s encouraging Israelis to visit Kashmir. Muslims all over the world have problem with Israel due to its aggressive policy towards Palestine,” Mirwaiz said on Friday.

CBI files FIR against more than 75 people: JPSC exams
Ranchi: CBI has filed FIR against more than 75 people in connection with 12 examinations conducted by Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), three weeks after Jharkhand High Court directed the investigating agency to probe the examinations as they were found to be allegedly tainted.
CBI on Friday filed FIRs in connection with five examinations and began preliminary investigation into seven others, according to sources in the central probe agency.
Making the second JPSC examination as the central point of being tainted, Jharkhand High Court had on June 14 directed a probe into as many as twelve various examinations.
The court had also ordered all officers, barring a woman officer, who had cleared JPSC-II examinations and got postings in various state government departments to stop work till CBI concluded its investigation and their salaries be stopped as the combined competitive examination was found to be tainted.
CBI on Friday filed FIRs in connection with five examinations and began preliminary investigation into seven others, according to sources in the central probe agency.
Making the second JPSC examination as the central point of being tainted, Jharkhand High Court had on June 14 directed a probe into as many as twelve various examinations.
Jundal claims ISI gave ammo for 26/11 strike - Online News
Indian intelligence agencies have for the first time sent an elaborate detailed report to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) detailing that there was fresh evidence regarding the involvement of David Coleman Headley in the 26/11 terror attacks.
The Indian agencies have informed the FBI that interrogation of Abu Jundal has revealed that Headley in fact was an “integral part’’ of the 26/11 terror plot.
Earlier, Jundal had claimed that he had met Headley twice at the Baitullah Mujahideen camp of the LeT in Muzaffarabad in 2007 in the run up to the Mumbai terror attacks.
In another important revelation that shows state support in Pakistan for the 26/11 incident, Jundal has said that the ammunition for the attack was provided by the Pak intelligence agency ISI.
He disclosed that an ISI operative had delivered at least two large cartons of AK-47 bullets at the Muzaffarabad camp. The ammunition, he revealed, was delivered in his presence.
Meanwhile, sources said now that the special cell has Jundal’s 15-day custody the focus will primarily be on getting more information about the local terror modules.

Removal of cartoons from textbooks illogical: NCERT chief - New Delhi
New Delhi: The controversy over cartoons in text books threatens to escalate. After a committee set up by the HRD Ministry recommended the removal of 43 cartoons, which included those of Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, from the NCERT textbooks of classes 9-12, the chief of the national council has said that there is no logic behind axing them.
The NCERT chief says that it is illogical to remove the cartoons in textbooks as recommended by the Thorat committee.
In fact, two of the “negative political” cartoons included those of Jawaharlal Nehru using his foot to propel a politician into the Governor’s house and a beggar out to garland Indira Gandhi.
The Thorat Committee said that the cartoons in Political Science textbooks were “educationally inappropriate”.
NCERT Chairperson Pravin Sinclair, however, says, “People are not happy with the report… It’s not obvious how some cartoons have been removed and some haven’t… There is no common logic behind why these cartoons are being axed…”
While the Dr BR Ambedkar caricature, that started the entire cartoons-in-textbooks controversy, is sure to be removed, the NCERT says it will fight to keep the others.
The Throat Committee’s recommendations have now been referred to the national monitoring committee for a second opinion. There is little chance that the report will be implemented in its entirety unless there is political pressure to do so. However, the High Court dismissed the plea and ordered for a CBI probe against Mr Samrite for making baseless allegations and seeking enquiry into it. Later, Mr Samrite approached the Supreme Court against the Hgh Court order. Then the Supreme issued notices to Rahul and UPA Government seeking response with in eight weeks.

New Delhi: Congress MLA from Borkhola, Assam, thirty-three-year-old Rumi Nath on Sunday said that the hundred-strong mob that surrounded her and thrashed her outside a Karimganj hotel on Friday night even attempted to rape her.
A badly bruised Rumi Nath told mediapersons, “The attackers misbehaved with me. They even tried to rape and kill me.”
“I believe it was a political conspiracy,” she added. “I don’t know these people, these guys. I have nothing to do with them. So why have they done it? I want to know the reason actually because I have never faced it. I have never seen them. I want to know why they have been used like this,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Assam Police on Sunday arrested five men in connection with the brutal assault.

New Delhi: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted Nagaland on Sunday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
The temblor struck at 9:44 am on Sunday. The epicentre of the quake was located at Phek in Nagaland. Tremors were also felt along Indo-Myanmar border region.
There are no reports of any casualties and damages so far.

Nagpur: The woman, Sheela Bake (35), allegedly attacked her daughter Vaishali with a sharp weapon, inflicting injuries on the latter’s neck and chest, resulting in her death, police said.
Later, the woman fled from her home and boarded a train. She got down at Wardha and jumped before a running train on Friday.
The Government Railway Police at Wardha sent her photo by email to Nagpur police, which confirmed her identity.
The woman was suspected to be mentally unsound and had frequent quarrels with her husband, police added.

Howrah: Terming the tenure of Mamata Banerjee as the ‘golden phase’ in the history of country’s largest network, Railway Minister Mukul Roy on Sunday said all the projects being implemented now were planned by the TMC chief.
“This is a phase when new trains are being introduced, line doubling work is carried on in several divisions, new projects are coming up. But all these had been planned by her, which is a golden era of Indian railways by all estimates,” Roy said at a function in Howrah station.
Giving credit to Mamata for the Metro rRil expansion project in the city, Roy said this will lead to an integrated railway network in future.
Roy said 74,000 recruitments had been made in the railways earlier while another 1,70,000 workers would be inducted in future.
The recruitments would also bolster the safety aspect, he said again reiterating Mamata had given all importance to the issue of railway safety and he would try to emulate her.
Four new local trains including Bandel-Naihati, Burdwan-Bandel, Howrah-Bandel and the Howrah-Lalkuan Weekly Express were introduced on the occasion.
The General Manager, Eastern Railways GC Agarwal was among the railway officials present.

APJ Abdul Kalam’s remark on Sonia leads to Congress-BJP spat
New Delhi: In his latest book, former president APJ Abdul Kalam has sought to dismiss speculation that he was the prime reason why Sonia Gandhi refused the PM’s post in 2004.
In the chapter titled ‘Controversial Decisions’ of his book ‘Turning Points, A Journey Through Challenges’, Kalam has written that if Sonia had made “any claim for herself, I would have had no option but to appoint her”.
It was widely believed that Kalam had reservations against Sonia Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister and this was the prime reason why Sonia did not.
The book is published by Harper Collins and is slated to be released next week.
The BJP, however, reacted to the issue saying the information was nothing new. “Kalam’s admission just proves that Sonia Gandhi enjoys power without accountability,” said Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
“This is not new… Kalam has said this many times in the past also… Sonia Gandhi takes all the key decision in the party… She has power without accountability… She has not done any sacrifice,” he added.
Meanwhile, Congress tried to deflect the tirade onto BJP, saying Kalam’s statement directly pointed at the party that “did not want Sonia Gandhi to be the Prime Minister”.
Satyavrat Chaturvedi said, “What Kalam has said directly points to the BJP who did not want Sonia Gandhi to be the Prime Minister. They had gone to the President. This (Kalam’s statement) speaks of the people who did not want to give Sonia Gandhi the right the Constitution has given her.”
The CPI(M) sought to brush aside the controversy saying Kalam’s tenure as president was a part of history.
“The contents of the book are coming out as his book is soon to be released and the Presidential election is happening so this makes some part of interesting news. Otherwise what happened then is a part of history, nothing beyond that,” CPI(M) leader D Raja said.

Bangalore blast accused Fasih Mohammed in Saudi net
In a second big terror catch in less than a week’s time, Saudi authorities on Saturday confirmed to the CBI, the nodal agency for the Interpol in India, that they have nabbed Fasih Mehmood, an alleged terror suspect in Bangalore blast and Jama Masjid case.
An engineer by profession, 28-year old Fasih is alleged to have been involved in the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast and the shooting incident near Jama Masjid (Delhi) in 2010 and was wanted by both Delhi and Karnataka police.
Saudi Arabia also confirmed Indian authorities about the detention of Fasih Mohammed who may be deported soon.
On the request of Karnataka and Delhi police, CBI had asked the Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against Fasih after which Saudi authorities conveyed to them that he had been apprehended by them.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities are in touch with Saudi authorities on the formalities to bring him back.

Congress MLA Rumi Nath beaten up for alleged bigamy - Assam
New Delhi: Thirty-three-year-old Congress MLA from Barak Valley (Assam) Rumi Nath was on Friday night thrashed by a hundred-strong mob at a Karimganj hotel. Rumi has invited the wrath of various groups for allegedly leaving her first husband and 2-year-old daughter and eloping and marrying her Facebook friend, 28-year-old Zakir Hussain.
Rumi had gone to meet her father on Friday when the incident happened.
What is even worse is that there has been no police action in the case almost 12 hours since the mob attack on the woman and her second husband. Rumi’s bodyguards too were beaten up by the angry crowd.
A severely injured Rumi and Hussain are in hospital now.

Blast at Medical College Hospital, 1 injured - Kolkata
Kolkata: A small explosion rocked the National Medical College and Hospital in the city injuring one person.
One sweeper of the National Medical College Hospital was injured when a plastic container containing some carbide material exploded with a bang when they tried to shake it.
No patient was, however, injured.
The bomb squad personnel have arrived to investigate the matter.
The Medical College Principal Shiddhartha Chakraborty said normal hospital services were not affected.
