A powerful earthquake of 8.9 magnitude hit the western coast of northern Sumatra on Wednesday. The quake was felt across the Indian Ocean. A tsunami warning has been officially issued in Indonesia, say reports.
TV reports say the tremors were also felt in Chennai, Ooty, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata; however, the intensity was not known as yet in the eastern coast of the country.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has initiated Indian Ocean wide Tsunami watch.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued tsunami watch for 28 countries, including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, Maldives, Britain, Malaysia, Mauritius, Syechelles, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Madagascar, Iran, UAE, Yemen, Bangladsh, Tanzania, Mozambique, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.
India also has issued tsunami warning for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands following the quake.
