Issuance of notices by the Supreme Court to six ministers in the Jaganmohan Reddy's assets case could not have come at a worse time for chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy who is preparing the party to put up a respectable performance in the by-elections for six Assembly seats in Telangana and one from Andhra.
All along, Congress leaders have been trying to paint Jaganmohan Reddy as corruption re-incarnate and targeting him, alleging quid pro quo deals by him when his father YS Rajasekhara Reddy was chief minister.
In the light of the latest developments, one Congress leader said: "If you continue the tirade against Jagan Mohan Reddy, will people trust you since your own ministers have been issued notices by the Supreme Court which means that that they were hand in glove with Jagan Mohan Reddy. Will this help the Congress in any way?"
Party leaders are worried that if the apex court asks the CBI to inquire into the role of the six ministers, then it will lead to a lot of unpleasantness at a time when the party will have to fight a second clutch of 16 bypolls in six months in Andhra and one in Telangana (Parkal).
While this is so, the news has come like music to the ears of the YSR Congress leaders. This is because they are angry with the Congress for singling out Jagan and sparing the ministers though they were also involved in decision-making during Rajasekhara Reddy's tenure.
"What we want from the ministers is whether the GOs are legal or illegal," said a YSR Congress leader and former economic advisor to the YSR government DA Somayajulu. The thinking in the YSR Congress is that if the GOs are legal, it means their leader is innocent. If not, Jagan will be not the only one to suffer.
For Telugu Desam there could not have been better news. No sooner did he get the news, party chief N Chandrababu Naidu demanded that chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy sack the ministers at once.
