Nepali-Indian actress Manisha Koirala, who was last seen in Onir’s ‘I Am’ is turning director by making a film on the life of Gautam Buddha.
To be produced by a Sri Lankan producer, Manisha, who is highly inspired by Buddha’s life immediately said yes to direct the film after she was approached to do it. The film will be shot in Sri Lanka.
This isn’t the first time that a film on Buddha’s life was announced. Earlier Mira Nair wanted to make a film on him but she backed off because Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci wanted to make Little Buddha with Keanu Reaves portraying the iconic figure of Asia.
Acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal wanted to make ‘Gautam Buddha’ with Hrithik Roshan in the lead in 2007 but the film was put off and was the case with Ashutosh Gowarikar, who revived it before calling off the film due to over budget.
A nation wide hunt for the male lead, Buddha, was conducted by Gowariker apart from roping in international technicians for the film.
Reports have it that Manisha Koirala’s film on Buddha might start during the final leg of this year. As soon as Manisha returns to Mumbai, she will start working on the film.
Give it your best shot Manisha.
