Political observers were in a state of shock looking at the winning margin of YSR Congress candidate Bhumana Karunakar Reddy in prestigious Tirupati by-poll constituency.
According to them, a winner can only get a narrow margin here, as Tirupati recorded the lowest polling percentage of 54 on the polling day (while in all the other constituency it is around 80) and it's the constituency of Congress Rajya Sabha member Chiranjeevi (neck-to-neck with YSR Congress). But, the people of the constituency honoured Bhumana with a thumping victory (17,975 votes majority), much higher than Chiru's winning margin in 2009 polls (around 10,000). Bhumana Karunakar Reddy got 59,195 votes, the Congress candidate Venkataramana got 41,220 votes and TDP candidate Chadalawada Krishnamurthy ended up at third spot with 30, 453 votes.
Despite distributing Rs. 2,000 per vote and registering around 15,000 bogus votes, Congress just managed to get the second position. People in several areas skipped the voting as the sitting MLA Chiru failed to resolve the issues in the constituency. In fact, many of the fans of Chiranjeevi boycotted the voting as their leader merged his party into Congress against their wish. Tirupathi by-poll debacle is the biggest failure of the actor-turned-politician after the merger of PRP with Congress. Will the by-poll debacle, he was now dropped to the second position in Tirupathi. If he fails to secure a win for his party in his own constituency, then how can he become a successful leader and how can he justify his goal to become CM. Shame on Chiru!
