Analysis:
This film was actually set in rural backdrop of Madhurai. Hence, we see raw Tamil nativity throughout the film. It is a dark romantic tale with rustic characters. Telugu audience love to see tender and soft love stories. This is not a film for Telugu sensibilities.
The pace of the film is also agonizingly slow. Tamil audience especially from the rural areas connected with the characters and situations in the film and that is the reason why it had clicked at the box office. Director Aamir didn’t cast any professional actors in the supporting roles. Except for few known faces most of the actors are the people from the areas where this film was shot. So the rawness and nativity is very intense in this movie, which puts off a Telugu viewer.
Second half is better with the romantic scenes between the lead pair, but the shocking climax will leave audiences in depression. It would be extremely hard to digest the last scene in this movie.
Performances:
Karthi came up with a stunning performance and it would be hard to believe that it was his debut film. Priyamani is splendid. National award is justified for her as she delivered a wonderful performance in the climax scene. Saravanan and Ponvannan are standard. Rest of the star cast is natural and believable.
Technicalities:
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score is the soul of this movie. Songs are not great but the background score haunts. Editing is alright. Cinematography by Ramji is pretty good. He has given the output that the director wanted. The film is extremely dark and that rustiness is brought on to the screen in a brilliant fashion. Director Ameer did a fine job. We can’t blame his directorial skills for that extreme Tamil flavor in the film. It was made keeping Tamil audience in mind and he did a fantastic job in impressing them.
Final Word: Malligadu stands out due to superb performances of Karthi and Priyamani. However, the film may not be liked by majority of Telugu audience due to too much Tamil nativity and the brutal yet shocking climax scene. This one is not recommended for sensitive audience.
