With Rajya Sabha elections slated for March 30, actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan is likely to have another Rajya Sabha term on the Samajwadi Party ticket. If the sources are to be believed, Jaya Bachchan will file Rajya Sabha nomination from SP.
If re-elected, this would be her third term to the Rajya Sabha from SP. She was first elected to the house in 2004 only to be re-elected in 2006.
Among those in the race for Rajya Sabha are Naresh Agarwal, a sitting BSP MP in the Rajya Sabha which he joined after 2007 elections in UP and an old-timer Mulayam loyalist Brij Bhushan Tiwari. Others in the list include former West Bengal Minister Kiranmoy Nanda, senior leader Ramji Lal Suman.
As many as 58 seats are set to fall vacant in Rajya Sabha on April 2, 2012. On the basis of the strength of the state assembly, there will be 10 vacancies from Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha.
In proportion to the party position in UP assembly, the SP will get a lion's share of those vacancies. Six will have a quota of 6 seats, two seats will go to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and one each to the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal-Congress.
As of now, the SP has four members in the Upper House with Ram Gopal Yadav as the leader.
