AT least 16 people have been killed and 26 seriously injured after two trains collided in Poland.
Rescuers worked through the night to cut through mangled wreckage to reach victims trapped in the front carriages.
Another 27 people were also injured, though less seriously.
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk has described the smash 50 miles from Krakow as the “worst catastrophe in years”.
He said: “Our feelings are with the victims and their families.”The express trains involved in the crash carried just over 350 people in total.
Officials said one train rammed into the other while it was stopping at Szczekociny station.
It was unclear why one of the trains was on the wrong track.Army helicopters were deployed to fly out those most seriously injured while a fleet of 450 emergency vehicles, 100 policemen and dozens of volunteer firefighters clawed at the wreckage.
Polish media showed images from the site of green and white train cars mangled and knocked off the tracks.Mr Tusk added: “Even more dramatic than the pictures are the facts.”This is our most tragic train disaster in many, many years.”
