Los Angeles : It is that time of the year when millions of movie lovers around the world gear up to watch the highest honor in filmmaking being bestowed on the people producing finest works in cinema.
This year, which happens to be the 84th year for Academy Awards, the grand and dazzling event will take place on Sunday, February 26 at the Kodak Theatre, at Hollywood and Highland. The event will be televised live by the ABC Television Network in more than 225 countries worldwide.
The nominees and presenters arriving on the red carpet will be greeted by Dave Karger, senior writer for Entertainment Weekly. This will be his second year as the red carpet greeter for the big event.
Apparently, American actor, writer, producer, comedian, and film director Billy Crystal (63) who gained prominence in the 1970s for playing Jodie Dallas on the ABC sitcom Soap will be hosting the much acclaimed and awaited ceremony. The actor has hosted the night for around eight times before.
Each category of award ranging from best actor and best actress to sound mixing and visual effects as usual has around five nominations, as announced on January 24.
This year while Demián Bichir (A Better Life), George Clooney (The Descendants), Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Brad Pitt (MoneyBall) have all been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Viola Davis (The Help), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) are running in the race to grab the coveted statue in Best Actress in a Leading Role category.
On the other hand, in the Directing category the nominations include The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius), The Descendants (Alexander Payne), Hugo (Martin Scorsese), Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen) and The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick).
In the Foreign Language Film, Bullhead (Belgium), Footnote (Israel), In Darkness (Poland), Monsieur Lazhar (Canada) and A Separation (Iran) have been nominated.
‘Hugo’ this year has been nominated in maximum number of categories including Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Film Editing, Original Score, Best Picture, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, and Adapted Screenplay.
It is closely followed by ‘The Artist’ with ten nominations, ‘MoneyBall’ with six and ‘The Descendants’ along with ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tatto’ with five each.
Interestingly, for the time in the history of the Academy Awards, a film from Pakistan has been nominated in the Documentary (Short Subject) category. ‘Saving Face’ which apparently deals with acid burn victims is the creation of Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy.
The names that have so far been revealed for performers and presenters include Christian Bale, Halle Berry, The ‘Bridesmaids’ Cast, Bradley Cooper, Tom Criuse, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie and Tom Hanks among others.
Oscars, presented by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), recognize the former year’s supreme achievements as determined by some of the world’s most accomplished motion picture artists and professionals.
The voting is done by academy’s 6000 members using secret ballots which are afterwards tabulated by the international auditing firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers. This secrecy is maintained until the presenters open the envelopes and reveal the winners.
