Chaalis Chaurasi boasts of a talented star cast that includes Naseeruddin Shah, Kay Kay Menon, Ravi Kishen and Atul Kulkarni but sadly enough only big names in the industry have mass appeal, and movies of these kind of star cast fail to get much attention from the audience. But there are films that have been recognized because of good content that includes films like ‘Udaan’ and ‘Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi’. So does Chaalis Chauraasi fall in their league? Will it make a mark in Bollywood that is dominated by Super stars. Well, the film does have an interesting plot and is gripping in parts. But there are a lot of sequences that are not required and seem out of place in the film; and that is what makes it an average film.
Story:
Pankaj Suri aka Sir (Naseeruddin Shah), Bobby (Atul Kulkarni), Kay Kay Menon (Pinto) and Shakti (Ravi Kishen) are all unintended petty criminals and plan a big robbery. The four of them aspire to make a big move and getaway with their criminal lives. The plan is to pretend being policemen and raiding a fake currency note godown created temporarily at a village near Mumbai.
Analysis:
The film begins on a very interesting note portraying good camaraderie between the lead characters. The characterization and the background of the characters is intriguing. The only flaw about the first half is the unnecessary song and dance sequences injected. However, the second half confuses us of being of another genre. The director himself seemed confused if he is making a thriller or a comedy. The climax fight sequence looks utterly stupid and. The makers have tried to put in all the necessary masala and so the film despite of having a talented star cast fails to impress.
Performances:
There is no doubt about the acting prowess of the lead stars of the film. From Naseer to Atul to Menon to Ravi Kissen, each actor performs his best. Their comic timing too is worth applauding. Shweta Bhardawaj added for glamour makes no mark. Zakir Hussain is decent. The rest of the supporting cast is good too.
Technicalities:
The script fails especially in the second half and can be said as the biggest flaw of the film. The music is absolutely below average and the songs were not required. Some camera angles were interesting however the cinematography and screenplay average. The film definitely has some good dialogues and the star casts’ delivery makes the dialogues even more interesting.
Plus points:
- Acting
- Dialogues
Minus points:
- Bad Script
- confused genre
- below average music
Final Word: A good star cast wasted.
