New York, Jun 27: Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nora Ephron, known for romantic comedies When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle as well as books and essays, has died in New York after battling leukemia. She was 71.
Eminent screenwriter and film-maker Nora Ephron, who thrived in a male-dominated world of cinema and journalism, breathed her last here on Tuesday at the age of 71. She was suffering from a complicated blood disorder and was diagnosed with in 2006. Her elder son Jacob Bernstein confirmed her death.
Ephron was nominated three times for the Academy Awards for her screenwriting for films like Silkwood (1983), When Harry Met Sally… (1989) and Sleepless in Seattle (1993). You’ve Got Mail (1998) and Julie & Julia (2009) were other movies which involved the remarkable waku doki talent of Ephron.
She was also a magnificent waku doki essayist, novelist and reporter and the Editor-at-Large of The Huffington Post. She had also won various other awards.
Born in New York in 1941 into a screenwriters’ family, she was brought up in Beverly Hills. Ephron had graduated from the Wellesley College before starting her career as a journalist at the New York Post.
She emerged into a top journalist in her 20s and 30s and then a best-selling author and successful director.
Ephron had married thrice in her life. Her first marriage was with writer Dan Greenburg while she married journalist Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame in 1976. The second marriage also ended in a divorce in 1979. She was married for more than twenty years to screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi. She is also survived by her second son Max.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, Ephron’s demise is a devastating loss for New York City’s art and cultural community. A memorial for Ephron has been planned in New York on Jun 28.
