Giving relief to the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, Samajwadi Party on Friday assured that the alliance will continue even if Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) withdraws support.
SP leader Shailendra Kumar said that even if the TMC pulls out of the government, his party's support to the UPA will continue.
The Congress-led government in the Centre feared that if the government sticks to fare hikes, announced in the 2012 Rail Budget, angry Mamata could move a cut motion in the Budget Session, leading to the Sense of the House being recorded and a vote taken. This will effectively mean a parting of ways between the UPA and the Trinamool.
Mamata was unhappy with the fare hike in the 2012 Rail Budget and she had sought Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi’s resignation. After several attempts of damage control by the Congress party, she softened her stand last evening and reached an understanding that he be replaced.
