Story
The film deals with fat Karthik's (Vinayaka) love for sophisticated Kalpana (Sonia). Karthik is a roly-poly boy with the cherubic face with an easy-going nature from small town in Tamilnadu. Sonia is strong, intelligent and a strong-willed modern Indian woman. She works in the same advertising agency as Karthik where she is very assertive. Kalpana and Karthik coincidently stay in the same apartment complex (Sonia stays in Sandhya's (Poonam Kaur) flat as her parents went abroad for a period of six months, while Karthik stays with Santhanam.
As is the norm in any Indian romance Kalpana and Karthik don't like each other at first. Then they have many opportunities to interact with each other as they're thrown together at work. Also, their friends Altaf (Suryatej) and Sandhya start romancing each other but then they break up again. Meanwhile, Kalpana who is engaged to Rajeev (Samrat) realises that this might not be the right man for her. Watch the movie to find out how fat this 'big fat love story' really is.
Santhanam adds more spice to the storyline with his comic sense.
Performance
With a chubby hero, and a very independent-minded heroine, this movie is unusual for its subtlety of characterisation. Bhalasekaran has executed the scenes carefully, sprinkling the right dialogues in the screenplay, and leaving no space for much nonsense anywhere in the film.
Analysis
Vinayaka as a happy-go-lucky is so natural at it sometimes you wonder whether its acting or is the actor himself like that? Well, it needs one more movie to assess the hero's acting abilities honestly. Sonia has breezed through her performance as a ambitious young career-girl who discovers that looks are not everything. The director has extracted adequate performances from Suryatej and Poonam Kaur.
While the songs could have been more memorable, the movie taken as a whole is very good.
Verdict
A small breath of fresh air seems to be blowing through the Tamil film industry and films such as these are a welcome change to the multi-starrer 'mass' movie that is the daily staple for Kollywood.
