‘I Am Singh’ is about the aftermath of the 9/11 American twin tower blast. The Asians facing racism white skin and hate crime. There is a message that director Puneet Issar is trying to put across that though delivered well, neglects the film making aspect and makes the film OTT.
Story:
Ranveer Singh (Gulzar Inder Chahal) stays in Chandigarh and has been called to LA because his brothers and father have been a victim of ‘Hate Crime’ prevailing in the American sub-continent. One of his brothers gets killed while the other is illegally detained by the LAPD for the murder of his own brother. His father is in the ICU and fighting for his life for being brutally hit by the a few racist rowdy Americans. He decides to fight a legal battle and meets many more in his journey who have gone through similar haplessness.
Analysis:
There are a lot of technical glitches in the film and it does not provide a pleasant cinematic experience. Yes, the subject is aggressive and it requires power but the lead stars get so loud and dramatic that you feel like you are getting a lecture rather than watching an entertaining film. There have been a lot of films made on racism and this one is no different. It tells a similar story though a few punches here and there could be lauded. The film is only for the Punjabis who are proud of the turban they wear.
Performances:
Performances by all actors is loud and aggressive. They even make the serious scenes seem predictable and funny. Tulip Joshi is decent while Puneet Issar is himself. The rest of the supporting cast including the foreigners are forced acting.
Technicalities:
Puneet Issar’s direction in ‘Garv’ was applauded but here he fails to make an impact. The background score is as loud as the dialogues. The music if Okay. Cinematography, editing are average. Music is decent with Daler as the positive point. In short there is nothing that the film can really boast about.
Plus Points: message against racism
Minus Points: Performances, direction
Final Word: Watch it if you are a sikh, and you might like it.
